How To Build a Paper Toy: General Instruction

Updated: Jan 30, 2021

All paper toy designers create their templates in different ways. The following are a general set of instructions which apply to all Glood Paper Toys and most other toys.

You Will Need

Access to a printer, card, scissors, craft knife, scoring tool, glue.

Download

The first step is to download a toy! All toys on this website can be downloaded for free through the download button on their page.

Print

The next step is to print the toy onto card. Glood recommends using cardstock 180 GSM or higher, and 'high quality' print setttings. You can also try changing the paper type to high resolution paper, or matte photo paper for a good result. Experiment to find out what works best for your printer and card.

Cut

Cut around the solid outlines of the template with scissors or a craft knife. For some toys, a knife is required for internal sections. It is recommended to supervise children at this stage!

Score

Card folds best when scored! Avoid creases and get an accurate fold line with this technique. You can use an empty ballpoint, bone folder or your craft knife for this. Use a ruler to guide your scoring tool across dashed lines before folding. Press hard if using a blunt object to create a defined crease, or use a light touch with a sharp tool just to break the cards surface.

Fold

Fold single dashed lines with mountain folds, and fold alternating dash lines with valley folds. It is advised crease all folds before you gluing anything as it can be difficult to fold some parts after starting. This will also help you to understand how the toy will come together.

Glue

Glue numbered tabs in order. Some simple toys will not include numbers. You can use craft glue, glue sticks or even double sided tape for this. Glood recommends using PVA glue applied with a paintbrush at this stage. Apply a thin layer of glue and leave to dry for a few moments until tacky. Press to the target destination for a few seconds more to achieve a tight hold quickly.

Play and Display!

Enjoy your completed paper toy in whichever way you like.
